Steeped in myth and legend, and rich in history, Cyprus has had a fascinating past, and amazingly much evidence of this history remains to this day, preserved for all to enjoy. You’ll find fascinating historical and archaeological sites all over Cyprus, but here are five we think should be at the top of your list to visit next time you’re here…

Ancient Koureion

Built on the hillside, Ancient Koureion enjoys impressive views. An ancient city, there is so much to see here. The Greco-Roman theatre dating back to the 2nd century BC has been painstakingly restored and is actually used for performances during the summer months. Close by you’ll find the remains of several villas with some truly stunning and incredibly well preserved mosaic floors. It’s so easy to let your imagination take you back in time here. Archaeological excavations have uncovered some fascinating finds all across Koureion, and you can find them on display in the museum.

Kolossi Castle

Originally built in the 13th century, then rebuilt in the 15th century, Kolossi Castle stands as a great example of military architecture. It was once the Grand Commandery of the Knights of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem, then later it came into the possession of the Knights Templar.

House of Dionysus

Located in the Paphos Archaeological Park, the House of Dionysus would have been a truly luxurious dwelling back when it was built in Roman times. There are many mosaic floors with scenes of hunting and mythology. There is also a beautiful floor artwork made entirely of shells depicting the sea monster Skyla. This was actually part of an older building and was incorporated into the Roman building when it was constructed.

Tombs of the kings

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Tombs of the Kings is a highly significant ancient site that should be top of your list of places to visit. The tombs are carved out of solid rock, with impressive Doric pillars surrounding the peristyle atrium. There is a distinct similarity to the tombs of ancient Egypt.

Baths of Aphrodite

This beautiful natural pool area has an almost magical feel. The waters are cool, so it’s the ideal place to escape the blazing midday sun. Take a dip in the waters, or find a beautiful and tranquil spot to relax and unwind. There are also some stunning trails to follow in the area where you can discover a wide range of native flora and fauna.
