1. The oldest wine in the world is made in Cyprus 

Dating back around 5000 years, Commandaria is a sweet Cypriot wine that is believed to be the oldest in the world. It’s still made here to this day and the recipe has changed little since ancient times. It was a favourite of King Richard the Lionheart who served it up during his wedding celebrations with a fitting declaration that it was “the wine of kings and the king of wines.”. 

 

2. Cyprus averages 320 sun-filled days a year 

We all associate Cyprus with sunny days on the beach, but did you know that the sun shines on Cyprus around 320 days a year? That means you can visit for your holiday and make plans to spend your time hiking, sunbathing or exploring the historic sites, and the weather won’t spoil any of it!  

 

3. One of the most popular dive sites in the world is in Cyprus

With its warm, crystal-clear waters, Cyprus is a popular destination for divers, and there are many great wrecks to explore here. One such delight for divers has made it to the list of the top 10 dive sites in the world, and that is the wreck of MS Zenobia, a huge ferry that capsized off the coast near Larnaca. This fascinating wreck is home to some stunning marine life, and there are also 108 articulated lorries still lying on the ocean bed along with all the cargo of the Zenobia. It truly is a sight to behold!  

 

4. Carnival in Cyprus dates back to celebrations of Dionysus 

The Cypriot people certainly know how to have fun, and Carnival time is definitely not to be missed. With its roots in celebrations of Dionysus, the God of wine, it’s perhaps no wonder that carnival time can be rather lively. Add in the Venetian influence with masks and stunning fancy dress, and you have a truly amazing party atmosphere on the streets of Limassol.
