With Valentine’s Day approaching, love is in the air and there’s nowhere in the world quite as romantic as Cyprus, the birthplace of the goddess of love! When you visit this magical island, you must take a trip to see some of the famous sites associated with Aphrodite, places where history meets myth and legend and romance abounds.

The story of Aphrodite

Legend has it that the goddess Aphrodite was born in the sea off the shores of Cyprus, born out of the sea foam that formed when Uranus was attacked by his son and fell into the sea. The waves carried the beautiful goddess safely to the shores of Paphos on a scallop shell, a romantic image that has often been recreated in art. The rock just off the coast of Paphos, known as Petra Tou Romiou has long been associated with the myths of Aphrodite and is a popular tourist attraction. It’s a breathtakingly beautiful place, with an air of timeless mystery.

Also in Paphos, near the fishing village of Latchi, is another spectacular and romantic site associated with Aphrodite. The baths of Aphrodite and Adonis are tranquil spots with pretty waterfalls and pools of water, refreshingly cool on a hot day. It is said that this location was where Aphrodite fell in love with Adonis, and where they conceived their children. Sadly the legend goes on to tell of the death of Adonis here, in the arms of his beloved Aphrodite after being accidentally stabbed by a hunter.

When you next visit Cyprus, spend time gazing out to sea and watch the seafoam crash around Petra Tou Romiou. It is said that when the sea is particularly rough, one can sometimes see shapes in the foam that could almost be human. When in Cyprus, you never quite know what is real and what is a myth, perhaps the truth is that the island holds the perfect blend of reality and rich history with just a little magic too.
